Flat Iron Steak 🥩 on Sophie’s 🥧 Birthday

Birthday 🥧 Pie.

If Sophie is choosing the menu, 🥩 steak will be on it. The actual birthday 🎂 is the 29th, but we have bigger plans for that. (Renting a party bus 🚌 and frequenting Jackson County establishments.)

How about the cheesy potatoes 🥔 topped with cornflakes!?! Along with the sweet corn from our garden!?! These goes with any occasion.

Now listen up! Every once in a while the JayC Store will have Flat Iron steaks on sale. The Flat Iron steak is cut from the chuck or shoulder of the beef. They are usually thick and tender. We like Chef’s Secret and or garlic salt for seasoning. Richard Hackman was the master chef tonight. (Zoom in on the 🥩 steak!)

Heidi’s 🍓 strawberry pie with a dollop is Cool Whip!

Seymour Healthy Zone

Heidi’s strawberry 🍓 Limeade Tea 💣 Bomb.
Vanilla waffle 🧇 with strawberries 🍓, 🍌 bananas, blueberries, whipped cream and drizzled with 🍫 chocolate…Whoa!!!

Saturday morning Heidi and I tried Seymour Healthy Zone which is located at 228 South Chestnut Street in Seymour, Indiana. The waffles 🧇 are protein-packed and gluten-free! Oh, and let’s not forget Delicious!!! We ate outside at a picnic table at the little park just north of the shop on a beautiful Saturday morning. We both recommend a visit to this healthy eating establishment. I don’t know how it tastes so good and is sugar-free, so I’m just going to have to trust them on that one.

BoomBozz Pizza

After furniture shopping (We bought a sectional and a recliner for our living room) we went to BoomBozz 🍕 Pizza In Clarksville. I started by perusing the impressive beer list and decided on a flight so I could taste a variety. I then ordered a custom made calzone with sausage, pepperoni and mushrooms while Heidi went for the Garden Pizza.

The calzone was hot and came with a cup of sauce and plenty of Parmesan cheese. Heidi digs all the veggies and hers was equally acceptable.

Custom made Calzone.
Beer Flight. Shandy. Cinnamon Blonde. Bubble Fruit Beer. Shotgun Wedding brown ale. The Six Foot Cinnamon Blonde was easily the best!

Smoke Justis: Covington, Kentucky

Walt’s Diner welcomes guest contributor Dr. David Wintin.

The Walt

Smoke Justis in Covington, KY, is named after Walt “Smoke” Justis (more on him later) . The place has a variety of smoked meats available. My choice was “The Walt”, a brisket based sandwich (though it was a knife and fork meal for me) with pepper jack cheese, onions, & a fried egg on sourdough from the brunch menu.

Outstanding on multiple levels. They have a great number of intriguing options on the menu but “The Walt” was my obvious choice. We chose outdoor seating, however, the facility is in an older section of Covington that is making a comeback. The indoor ambiance looked to be impressive.

Back to “The Walt”, not the sandwich. Smoke Justis , an Indiana native, was the opening day pitcher for the Covington Blue Sox of the Federal League in 1913, their only season. He pitched in 2 games for the Detroit Tigers in 1905. Made the St. Louis Browns in 1908 but got in a wrestling match with a teammate the day before opening day, got injured and never played in the majors again(except for his 1913 tour with the Blue Sox). He was known for practicing sliding in hotel hallways and wearing ladies silk stockings under his baseball uniform.

Midway Night at the Fair

Wrapping up the 2020 virtual fair we traveled the midway for games and food. I would like to thank long time Fair Board member Francis Elliott for eating with us this week.

A deserted fairgrounds with an unlit sign on a rainy day.
The Italian sausages covered in onions 🧅 and 🌶 peppers were an incredible item. Also, the marinated chicken on a stick was well received.
Nina’s elephant ear was the real deal!
Italian sausage, jalapeño popper, grilled chicken and a blooming 🧅 onion.
Brooks Baker was rocking the pineapple whip mustache.
Jude attacked the cotton candy.
The Poor Jack Amusements team provided games.
Vanessa tried to make her dad, Ken, proud at the bottle game.
Mendy handed out prizes to Jude.
Grandpa Doug with Brooks and Jude.
Fried Oreos and Snickers!

I probably gained at least five pounds this week, However, , every calorie was part of a larger event and it was fun to share each night with friends and family like we would have done at the Jackson County Fair. Until next time, farewell.

P.S. My next post will be a salad.

Friday at the Fair

The Conservation Club fish sandwich was a hit. Trumped only by how awesome the 🍟 fries were. ( we added some JR. Mads and some garlic salt)
Once again, Bruce, from Poor Jack Amusements slayed the drying. He also won a blue ribbon for his 🌽 corn entry.
Awesome French dries!
Bruce’s winning 🌽 corn entry! His blue ribbon ear dwarfed the lowly red ribbon participant.
Horticulture display.
Nina Hackman’s first place Pineapple Pie at the Family Arts building.
Mendy’s Swedish Nut cake and heavenly Angel Food cake.
Heidi’s zucchini butterscotch Blondies on the left and peanutbutter no bakes on the right.

Fair Food: Sauers

Molly Bassett can only hope a morsel Hits the floor. Nina’s chili soup, Bruce grilled burgers 🍔 on the Blackstone as well as delivered on the sweet 🌽 corn from the family garden. As the rain cooled things down tonight, the chili really hit the spot.
A true Sauers girl , Kristen Stuckwisch had her Mom, Marti, bake this incredible peach 🍑 🥧 pie.

Immanuel Stand: Fair Food Wednesday

Fried Platter. Fried, chicken, mozzarella stick, corn dog and onion 🧅 rings.
Corn dog, fresh tomatoes 🍅, slaw, onion rings, fried pickles, chicken strip.
Jude enjoyed the hog barn.
Chandler Stahl: Grand Champion Holstein.
Poor Jack Amusements provided the fryer.
We saw a “Carnie” on his way home.
For dessert we had Farm Bureau ice cream.

The Choco Taco: Fair Food Tuesday

Taco 🌮 Salad from the St. Peter’s Taco House, complete with the cardboard 🚣‍♂️ boat, was featured at the Fair Food 2020 party tonight. I like mine with Fritos, taco meat, lettuce, black beans, cheese and Western Dressing.

It was delicious, however, Mendy Stahl’s rendition of the Choco 🌮 Taco was DaBomb.com!!! She made crepes with waffle batter, filled them with ice cream, folded them up and topped them with chocolate and nuts. They were incredible!

Once again, the Lemon Shake Up was the featured drink of champions.

Taco 🥗 Salad with jalapeños, tomatoes 🍅 and drizzled with Ranch dressing.

Great conversation with three generations of fair goers and friends just like we were sitting around the “Hackman Tree” at the Jackson County Fair.

New Bethel Ordinary

Located in Wanamaker, Indiana you will find the New Bethel Ordinary. Actually, it is extraordinary!!!

This is one time that I like “Finger Pointing.”

Wanamaker is in Franklin Township of Marion County. (Indy)

Tenderloin strips with horseradish and ranch dipping sauces. Ordering an entire tenderloin 🥪 sandwich was asking too much. It was like a relationship when all I really wanted was a date for Tuesday afternoon.
Rae’s sausage, pepperoni and mushroom personal 🍕 pizza. Exceptional.
Texas BBQ 🍔 Burger.

The Texas BBQ 🍔 Burger was a whopping half pound of ground beef topped with cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce and an onion ring on a toasted bun! It was speared with a big kitchen knife 🔪.

I couldn’t really pay much attention to the huge order of 🍟 fries and green beans.
Myself, Rae, and our wonderful hosts Bill and Audrey Bush.

This slice of Americana has a craft beer list and the food is far from ordinary. This old cast iron wood stove adds character just sitting outside the front door.

Poor Heidi had to work today so I had to appreciate this for her. Audrey shared a slice of her pizza and Heidi really enjoys the crusty cheese at the edge of the pizza like this.
